The first Bowie Bakery was established in 1951, and is located in the heart of El Paso at 901 Park Street, 79901. Don Angel Marquez (the original owner of the bakery) moved to El Paso. Working for a bakery, he met his wife, María Guadalupe Márquez. They moved to California, but relocated in El Paso in 1971. After that, Don Angel made a little bakery, in the heart of El Paso. |

1. Where were you born/raised?
I was born in California, but as an infant my parents and I moved to El Paso and I was raised there by my parents Don Angel and Maria Guadalupe Marquez.
2. Who or what inspired you to start baking?
When we moved back to El Paso, my dad opened a little bakery in the "Segundo Barrio", then he tought me how to bake Mexican pastries. My father was my biggest inspiration to start baking.
3. How long have you been working for Bowie Bakery?
Ever since the bakery opened, I would work and help out at the bakery, but when I got good at actually baking the pastries I stated to get a paying job.
4. What is your opinion on how Bowie Bakery affects El Paso?
Bowie Bakery affects El Paso in many ways. For example, since it was built in the "Segundo Barrio", it affected many people that were raised there, including me, besides the fact that my dad was the owner. Many people consider Bowie Bakery as part of their childhood.
5. What did President George W. Bush’s letter say? Did it affect you, your employees, your customers, and your bakery itself?
Since he visited El Paso, we decided to give him a Mexican taste and tradition by giving him our pastries. He came into our bakery and he ate so much. He really loved it. The letter that he sent us was a thank you letter saying that we were the highlight of his day.
6. Do you have anyone that can carry into your footsteps after you are ready to pass on your bakery?
Me and my wife, Erika, are planning on having kids soon, but I bet that they will carry on me and my fathers footsteps.
7. Did the bakery have an original name before it was named Bowie Bakery?
Actually, it was just named Don Angels pastries, it wasn't on any maps, until people started noticing us and we changed the name.
8. Do you plan on opening another bakery, besides the other two locations, other than the one downtown?
I did plan on opening a bakery but I thought that three bakeries were enough, and they were well spread out though El Paso.
